Netherton Hub / Longside substations and HVDC converters

Under construction

Main hub construction is underway near Longside, west of Peterhead. The development comprises 400 kV and 132 kV substations, separate Spittal–Peterhead and EGL3 HVDC converter stations, a transmission hall identified for EGL5, and an operations and spares base. Shared site earthworks do not mean that every converter or cable is already operational.

The hub is in its construction phase. SSEN says Phase 1 approvals cover civil works and platforms; detailed electrical equipment approvals follow in stages. September 2026 notices describe October access works off the A950.

What this link contributes

This asset provides a route for electricity to move between networks or strengthens the network carrying that electricity. Its capacity cannot be added to wind, solar or power-station capacity as though it were another generator.

Converter stations, cable manufacture, offshore installation, landfall works and grid energisation can progress at different times. The status above describes the documented project stage rather than assuming all work packages are complete.

Project location

SSEN publishes grid reference NK052460 for this hub near Longside. The reference is a 100 m grid square, not a precise equipment position or entrance. The two converters, AC substations and transmission hall are components of this shared hub.

Markers identify sites, published points or labelled connection areas. Markers are not site boundaries or entrances. EGL2’s additional outlines and route layers are explicitly identified in the developer’s map data.
