Peterhead / Boddam 275 kV Substation Transformer Upgrade

Under construction

SSEN reports first-phase construction underway in July 2026, including platform earthworks, drainage and a SuDS pond. Balfour Beatty is carrying out the works. Construction is expected to finish by 2028, with commissioning and energisation by 2030. This is separate from the EGL2 HVDC converter and existing power station.

What this link contributes

This asset provides a route for electricity to move between networks or strengthens the network carrying that electricity. Its capacity cannot be added to wind, solar or power-station capacity as though it were another generator.

Converter stations, cable manufacture, offshore installation, landfall works and grid energisation can progress at different times. The status above describes the documented project stage rather than assuming all work packages are complete.

Project location

SSEN places the upgrade at the existing Peterhead substation near Boddam. An exact work-package position has not been verified; this map provides geographic context only.
