About Thorpe Marsh Power Station

Thorpe Marsh near Doncaster operated from 1963 to 1994 β€” only 31 years. Its cooling towers were demolished just five years after closure.

History

Two 550 MW units commissioned in 1963. Closed prematurely in 1994 under National Power. Cooling towers demolished in 1999. The relatively short life reflected its inefficient older-generation design being uneconomic in a post-privatisation market.

The site today

Closed 1994. Cooling towers demolished 1999. Main buildings demolished by 2005. Proposed CCGT replacement never proceeded.
