About Fiddler's Ferry Power Station

Fiddler's Ferry was a 2 GW coal station in Cheshire whose eight 114m cooling towers and 200m chimney dominated the Mersey Valley for nearly 50 years.

History

First generated electricity in 1971 with four English Electric 500 MW units. Owned by SSE in its final years. Unit 1 closed in 2019; the remaining three units ran until end of March 2020. The eight cooling towers were demolished in three batches between 2021 and 2023 β€” a ten-second event watched by tens of thousands.

The site today

Closed 31 March 2020. All eight cooling towers and the chimney were demolished between 2021 and 2023. Peel Group is redeveloping the site.
