How Connahs Quay compares

5th of 49largest gas-fired stations in the UK register
2nd of 3in Wales
4.3%of listed UK gas-fired capacity

Gas-fired power stations burn natural gas. Combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants reuse exhaust heat to raise steam for a second turbine, making them more efficient than single-cycle (open-cycle) gas turbines, which are used mainly for short peaks in demand.

About Connahs Quay

History

Commissioned in March 1996 after construction began in July 1993. Cost Β£580 million. Originally owned by Powergen, then E.ON, now Uniper. Initially fuelled with gas from the Point of Ayr offshore gas field via a dedicated terminal. Four chimneys distinguish it from the older Deeside CCGT one mile to the east.
