About Croydon B Power Station

Croydon B was a coal power station in South London whose 90m chimney was a landmark from 1950 to 1991. The IKEA Croydon store now sits on its site, incorporating the original towers.

History

Commissioned in 1950, closed in 1984. Famously, the 90m chimney was not demolished β€” it was incorporated into the IKEA Croydon store which opened in 1992. The Swedish retailer painted the towers in IKEA blue and yellow, making it a unique piece of industrial heritage reuse.

The site today

Station closed 1984, buildings demolished 1991 β€” but the two 90m chimneys were retained. IKEA Croydon opened on the site in 1992 with the chimneys painted in company colours.
