How Battersea Power Station compares
Coal-fired stations burned coal to raise steam for turbines. Great Britain's last coal-fired power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, closed in September 2024.

Battersea Power Station is one of the most iconic buildings in London. Built in two phases (A in 1933, B in 1955), its four white chimneys became a defining feature of the city skyline. After closing in 1983 it sat derelict for decades before reopening in 2022 as luxury flats, shops and restaurants.
History
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (also responsible for the red telephone box), Battersea was at one point the largest brick building in Europe. It featured on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals with an inflatable pig flying between its chimneys. After 39 years of dereliction, a Β£9bn redevelopment saw it reopen as a mixed-use destination in October 2022.
The site today
Reopened October 2022 as a Β£9bn mixed-use development with 254 apartments, shops, restaurants, Apple's UK HQ and a glass lift inside the north-west chimney offering 360Β° views of London.
