Shetland HVDC Link

Operating

The Shetland connection was energised in 2024. Its 260 km subsea link integrates with the Caithnessโ€“Moray system. It connects island renewable generation, including the Viking wind farm, while providing a connection for island electricity supply.

What this link contributes

This asset provides a route for electricity to move between networks or strengthens the network carrying that electricity. Its capacity cannot be added to wind, solar or power-station capacity as though it were another generator.

Converter stations, cable manufacture, offshore installation, landfall works and grid energisation can progress at different times. The status above describes the documented project stage rather than assuming all work packages are complete.

Project location

Connection sites and areas are shown separately. Dashed circles mark approximate endpoint areas. No straight line is presented as the cable or overhead-line route.
