Fixed + green upgrade Checked July 2026

OVO 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity Explained

2026 OVO 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity combines a twelve-month fixed energy tariff with OVO's renewable electricity upgrade. The plan fixes the household's electricity and gas unit rates and standing charges for one year. It also matches the customer's electricity use with renewable electricity purchased from identifiable UK generators through Power Purchase Agreements. OVO currently prices the Greener Electricity element at ยฃ80 for the year. The normal standalone upgrade costs ยฃ8 a month, or ยฃ96 over twelve months, so the fixed bundle provides twelve months for the usual price of ten. The charge is included through the tariff's standing-charge structure rather than appearing as the ordinary separate monthly upgrade. This guide was checked on 11 July 2026.

How the tariff works

The energy-supply part operates in the same general way as OVO's ordinary 1 Year Fixed tariff. OVO agrees an electricity unit rate and daily standing charge when the customer joins. A dual-fuel customer also receives a fixed gas unit rate and gas standing charge. These rates remain fixed for twelve months from the tariff start date. The total bill is not fixed because it still depends on how much electricity and gas the household uses. A customer using more energy during winter will pay more even though the price of each unit remains unchanged. A household that reduces consumption will pay less. The tariff therefore offers price certainty rather than a guaranteed annual bill. OVO confirms that fixed plans lock the unit rates and standing charges for the contract term.

What Greener Electricity provides

Greener Electricity is OVO's paid renewable electricity upgrade. OVO states that it buys enough renewable electricity from UK-based generators to match the amount of electricity used by participating customers. The electricity is purchased using Power Purchase Agreements, commonly called PPAs. A Power Purchase Agreement is a contract between an electricity buyer and a generator. It can provide the generator with greater certainty that its electricity will have a buyer and an agreed commercial route to market. OVO also purchases the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin associated with the electricity. These certificates provide evidence that the matched electricity was generated from a renewable source. The plan is therefore more specific than a general statement that a supplier has bought renewable certificates from somewhere in the market. OVO says its electricity is traceable to UK generators with which it has PPAs.

The electricity arriving at the property is still mixed

Joining the tariff does not create a separate physical electricity connection between the household and a particular wind or solar farm. Electricity from renewable, nuclear, gas-fired and other generators enters the same national electricity system. The power reaching an individual property reflects the electricity flowing through the local and national networks at that moment. OVO explains that the household will still receive electricity from the National Grid's mixed sources. Its commitment is to purchase and add an amount of UK renewable electricity equal to the participating customer's consumption. This distinction is important. The plan does not claim that every electron entering the property was generated by renewable technology. It creates a contractual match between the customer's annual electricity use and electricity purchased from renewable generators.

The ยฃ40 renewable-generator contribution

OVO also commits money towards supporting new independent renewable generation in the United Kingdom. Under the current Greener Electricity terms, OVO makes a ยฃ40 contribution for each customer during each qualifying twelve-month period. The contribution is intended to support new UK renewable generators that do not receive support through government or industry subsidy schemes. OVO says this money is used to purchase electricity from qualifying generators at above-market rates. A commitment from a large energy company to buy future power can also help a developer demonstrate expected revenue when seeking project finance. The ยฃ40 is not a payment to the customer and is not deducted from the household's energy bill. It is a contribution made by OVO as part of providing the upgrade. Only one contribution is made for each customer during a twelve-month period. Cancelling and rejoining within the same year does not generate another contribution.

What the ยฃ80 annual price means

The standalone Greener Electricity upgrade currently costs ยฃ8 a month. Twelve months at the ordinary price would cost ยฃ96. The 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity tariff supplies the upgrade for ยฃ80 over the year, producing a ยฃ16 reduction against twelve standalone monthly payments. This is why OVO describes the offer as receiving twelve months for the price of ten. The ยฃ80 should be included when comparing the tariff with OVO's ordinary 1 Year Fixed plan. A customer should not compare only the electricity and gas unit rates. The correct calculation is: Annual electricity charges Plus annual gas charges, where applicable Plus all standing charges Including the ยฃ80 Greener Electricity cost Plus any other additions The resulting figure should then be compared with the cost of an ordinary fixed tariff and with competing renewable-electricity offers.

Eligibility

OVO's general Greener Electricity conditions require the customer to be on a pay-monthly OVO energy plan. The household can be electricity-only or dual fuel. The account must be paid by monthly Direct Debit, with payments made on time and at least at the recommended amount. Customers must also receive account communications electronically and keep their email address current. The bundled tariff is subject to availability and the specific quotation offered for the property. OVO's standard Greener Electricity upgrade can normally be added to any eligible pay-monthly plan. The dedicated 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity product builds the upgrade into a twelve-month fixed arrangement. A smart meter is not identified as the central requirement for the renewable matching itself. However, OVO may impose metering or account conditions through the live quotation, and a smart meter is needed for other services such as Charge Anytime.

Electricity only or dual fuel

The tariff can be offered to electricity-only or dual-fuel customers. Greener Electricity applies to electricity consumption. It does not make the household's gas renewable. A dual-fuel customer still receives ordinary mains gas under the gas part of the fixed contract. The renewable matching, PPAs and associated certificates relate to the electricity used by the household. This should be made clear when assessing the environmental value of the plan. A home with substantial gas heating consumption may still have a significant direct carbon footprint even when its electricity consumption is matched with renewable generation. Reducing gas demand through insulation, heating controls or lower-carbon heating can have a larger effect than changing the contractual source of electricity alone.

Regional prices and quotations

OVO does not publish one national fixed electricity and gas rate for every property. Electricity prices and standing charges can vary by distribution region. Meter arrangement, fuel selection and the quotation available on the day may also influence the offer. The customer should review: The electricity unit rate The electricity standing charge The gas unit rate, where relevant The gas standing charge The ยฃ80 Greener Electricity cost The estimated annual bill The contract dates The exit fees The tariff information supplied during sign-up should be retained. It provides the exact prices that apply to the individual account.

Exit fees

OVO currently lists an early exit fee of ยฃ50 for each fuel on the 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity tariff. An electricity-only customer could therefore face a ยฃ50 charge for leaving early. A dual-fuel customer could face a total of ยฃ100 if both supplies leave before the relevant fee-free period. The exit fee should be included when comparing a mid-contract switch. A tariff saving of ยฃ80 would not create a genuine financial benefit if leaving the current dual-fuel plan cost ยฃ100. Customers should check their individual contract before switching because fee exemptions and renewal-window rules can depend on the circumstances and tariff version.

Can Greener Electricity be cancelled separately?

OVO's ordinary standalone Greener Electricity upgrade can generally be cancelled through the customer's online account or by contacting OVO. It normally ends at the next billing date, and partial-month refunds are not provided. The conditions are more restrictive when Greener Electricity forms part of an energy plan. OVO's general terms state that it may not be possible to cancel the upgrade immediately where it is included in the tariff itself. The customer must refer to the separate plan conditions. A customer joining the bundled fixed tariff should therefore assume that the renewable feature is part of the twelve-month package unless the specific contract states otherwise. Someone unsure about making a year-long commitment could instead consider an ordinary OVO tariff with the standalone ยฃ8 monthly upgrade, which offers greater cancellation flexibility but costs more over a complete twelve months.

Compatibility with Charge Anytime

OVO lists 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity as compatible with Charge Anytime. Charge Anytime is OVO's managed electric-vehicle charging service. It operates as an addition to the household tariff rather than changing the price of all electricity used at night. Ordinary household electricity remains charged at the fixed tariff rate. Eligible vehicle charging is handled under the selected Charge Anytime plan or pay-as-you-go arrangement. This means an EV owner may combine fixed household rates, renewable electricity matching and managed charging. However, the environmental matching does not mean that the car is physically receiving renewable electricity at every moment it charges. OVO matches the participating household's consumption through its renewable purchasing arrangements.

Comparing it with ordinary 1 Year Fixed

The principal difference is the renewable-electricity package. Both tariffs fix the household's rates for twelve months and currently have ยฃ50-per-fuel early exit fees. Both are also compatible with Charge Anytime. The Greener version adds: Renewable electricity matched through UK PPAs Associated renewable-generation certificates Traceability to UK generators A ยฃ40 annual contribution supporting new independent renewable generation An annual customer cost of ยฃ80 The ordinary 1 Year Fixed tariff allows Greener Electricity to be added separately at ยฃ8 a month. The dedicated bundle is therefore ยฃ16 cheaper across a full year at the current advertised prices.

Who is most likely to benefit?

OVO 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity may suit a customer who already wants to fix energy prices for twelve months and is willing to pay extra for a more traceable renewable-electricity arrangement. It is most attractive to someone who expects to keep the upgrade for the complete year, because the bundled price is lower than paying the normal monthly fee twelve times. It may also appeal to customers who value direct contractual purchasing from UK renewable generators and OVO's contribution towards newer independent projects. The tariff may be less suitable for someone focused entirely on obtaining the lowest possible energy bill. It may also be unsuitable for a customer likely to leave OVO during the year, because the tariff has early exit fees and the renewable element forms part of the package. A household with solar panels should not assume that the tariff affects payments for exported electricity. OVO's Smart Export Guarantee products are separate agreements. OVO 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity combines price protection with a more transparent form of renewable electricity matching. Its environmental value lies in the UK Power Purchase Agreements and support for new generators, while its financial cost is a clearly identifiable ยฃ80 over the year.
