Variable Checked July 2026

OVO Simpler Energy Explained

OVO Simpler Energy is the supplier's standard variable tariff for household electricity and gas. It has no fixed contract period, no early exit fee and prices that can change when the Ofgem energy price cap is updated. It is designed for customers who value flexibility more than long term price certainty. A household can remain on the tariff without committing to a fixed end date and can move to another OVO product or change supplier without paying a tariff exit charge. This guide was checked on 11 July 2026.

How Simpler Energy works

Customers pay a unit rate for every kilowatt hour of electricity or gas used. They also pay a daily standing charge for each fuel supplied to the property. The unit rate covers the energy consumed. The standing charge is applied every day, including days when little or no energy is used. It contributes towards costs such as maintaining energy networks, operating meters and supporting industry obligations. Simpler Energy does not promise one permanent price. OVO states that its variable prices can change every three months in line with energy market conditions and the Ofgem price cap. The usual price cap periods begin in January, April, July and October. The tariff has no fixed end date. A customer can remain on it until they choose another product, move supplier or become subject to another account change.

Prices from July 2026

The Ofgem price cap applying from 1 July to 30 September 2026 is based on average electricity and gas rates across England, Scotland and Wales. For a household paying by Direct Debit, the national average electricity unit rate is 26.11 pence per kilowatt hour. The average gas rate is 7.33 pence per kilowatt hour. Average standing charges are 57.19 pence a day for electricity and 29.04 pence a day for gas. These figures are useful references, but they are not the exact Simpler Energy prices for every property. Electricity prices vary between distribution regions, while payment method, meter type and whether the customer has Economy 7 can also affect the quotation. OVO tells customers their individual rates through the quotation process, account, bill or tariff information. A household in northern Scotland may therefore pay a different electricity rate and standing charge from a household in southern England. OVO presents the July 2026 price cap as ยฃ1,663 a year for a typical household using the revised Ofgem consumption assumptions of 2,500 kilowatt hours of electricity and 9,500 kilowatt hours of gas. That figure is not a limit on the annual bill. A household using more energy will pay more, while one using less should pay less.

The price cap is not a maximum bill

The Ofgem price cap restricts the rates that suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs. It does not set a maximum amount that a household can be billed. A five bedroom property with high gas consumption may spend considerably more than the headline price cap figure. A small efficient flat may spend much less. Electric heating, hot water cylinders, swimming pool equipment, electric vehicles and home businesses can all increase electricity demand beyond the typical national assumptions. A reliable tariff comparison should therefore use the household's actual annual electricity and gas consumption. The national headline figure is useful for tracking general price movements but is not an individual quotation.

No contract and no exit fee

One of the main benefits of Simpler Energy is the absence of an early exit fee. OVO currently charges no fee for leaving the tariff, changing to another OVO plan or switching to another supplier. This can be helpful for customers who expect to review their energy arrangements in the near future. A household considering an electric vehicle, solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump may prefer to avoid a fixed contract until it understands how those technologies will change its consumption. The same flexibility can help someone expecting to move home. A fixed tariff may offer a lower rate, but an exit fee could reduce the benefit if the customer needs to leave early. Freedom to switch does not mean that Simpler Energy will always be the cheapest choice. It means the customer can act when a better option becomes available without paying a tariff penalty.

Paying by Direct Debit

OVO says customers paying by Direct Debit generally receive lower prices than customers using some other payment methods. It currently estimates an average annual saving of ยฃ133 from choosing Direct Debit, although the actual amount depends on consumption and account circumstances. A monthly Direct Debit is not the same as the tariff price. It is a payment arrangement intended to spread estimated annual costs across the year. OVO reviews expected consumption, current rates and the account balance when calculating the monthly amount. The payment can increase if the household uses more energy than expected or has built up debt. It can decrease if consumption falls or excessive credit accumulates. Customers comparing tariffs should examine unit rates, standing charges and projected annual cost rather than looking only at the proposed monthly payment.

Smart meters and meter readings

A smart meter is not essential for joining Simpler Energy. Customers with traditional meters can submit readings manually. A communicating smart meter can improve billing accuracy and show when electricity is being used. This information becomes particularly valuable when considering electric vehicle charging, battery storage or other flexible demand. OVO customers with compatible smart meters may also gain access to rewards and energy use programmes such as Power Move and Beyond. These programmes have their own eligibility conditions and should not be confused with the tariff itself. An ordinary meter reading shows total electricity or gas use. Half hourly smart meter data provides a much more detailed profile, allowing the household to see how much electricity is consumed overnight, during the day and at periods of high national demand.

Using Simpler Energy with Charge Anytime

OVO lists Simpler Energy as compatible with Charge Anytime. Charge Anytime is an electric vehicle charging addition rather than a separate household electricity tariff. The home remains on Simpler Energy, while qualifying managed vehicle charging is billed or credited according to the selected Charge Anytime arrangement. The current pay as you go option reduces qualifying smart vehicle charging to 14 pence per kilowatt hour. OVO also offers four monthly plans. These provide fixed monthly allowances for managed home charging and annual public charging vouchers. The home's ordinary lighting, cooking, heating and appliance use remains charged at the Simpler Energy rate. This can make Simpler Energy more useful to an electric vehicle owner than its standard unit rate initially suggests. The customer should still compare the combined household tariff and Charge Anytime cost with other suppliers' dedicated overnight products.

Greener Electricity and boiler cover

OVO allows customers on Simpler Energy to add its Greener Electricity upgrade where available. The upgrade supports electricity backed by renewable generation certificates and is priced separately from the standard tariff. It does not create a cheaper time period or change how much electricity the home consumes. Boiler cover may also be purchased separately. This is an insurance and maintenance product rather than part of the ordinary Simpler Energy tariff. These additions should be compared independently. A lower energy tariff and separately purchased cover may sometimes cost less than a bundled arrangement.

Who may benefit from Simpler Energy

Simpler Energy may suit a customer who wants flexibility, has no immediate desire to fix prices and prefers a straightforward tariff. It can be a sensible temporary product for someone waiting for a smart meter, arranging an electric vehicle charging service or deciding whether to install solar panels and battery storage. It may also appeal to customers who believe variable prices could fall and want any future price cap reductions passed through without waiting for a fixed contract to end. People with unpredictable plans may value the absence of exit fees more than a small potential saving from fixing.

Who should compare other OVO tariffs

A household that values price certainty should compare OVO's 1 Year Fixed and 2 Year Fixed tariffs. The one year product currently has an exit fee of ยฃ50 for each fuel. The two year product has an exit fee of ยฃ95 for each fuel. Both fix the unit rates and standing charges for their stated contract periods. Homeowners wanting boiler protection may compare the 1 Year Fixed Plus Boiler Cover package. Customers wanting traceable renewable electricity can examine 1 Year Fixed Plus Greener Electricity. Electric vehicle owners should calculate the combined cost of Simpler Energy and Charge Anytime. Solar owners should compare OVO's Smart Export Guarantee options, although export payments are separate from the cost of imported electricity.

Calculating the annual cost

The most useful comparison begins with annual consumption. Electricity cost is calculated by multiplying annual electricity use by the regional electricity unit rate, then adding 365 days of electricity standing charges. Gas should be calculated separately using annual gas consumption, the regional gas rate and 365 days of gas standing charges. Any Charge Anytime subscription, Greener Electricity payment, boiler cover premium or export income should then be added or deducted separately. OVO Simpler Energy offers a clear and flexible starting point. Its main strengths are freedom to leave, simple pricing and compatibility with OVO additions. Its main weakness is that it offers no protection from future price cap increases and no dedicated low cost period for ordinary household electricity.
